Abstract
EI sitio de la Joyanca está ubicado en el noroccidente de Petén, al sur del río San Pedro Mártir, en el Área de Amortiguamiento de la Reserva de la Biosfera Maya. El sitio pertenece a la categoría de las "ciudades" mayas clásicas de rango superior-medio. Fue descubierto en 1993, durante la construcción del oleoducto La Libertad-Xan, por dos arqueólogos, asesores de la compañía Basic Resources International, la cual apoya ampliamente el programa de investigación. Desde febrero 1999, un equipo pluridisciplinario franco-guatemalteco, dirigido por Marie-Charlotte Arnauld y Erick Ponciano, está investigando ahí.
