Abstract
Durante el periodo de 1982 a 1991 las elecciones salvadoreñas fueron motivo de controversia en los medios académicos y noticiosos estadounidenses. Los críticos insistían en que dichas elecciones intentaban demostrar que existía una opción de centro, apoyada por la mayoría de los salvadoreños, con el objeto de convencer al Congreso de Estados Unidos de mantener la ayuda económica y militar a ese país centroamericano. Esto se entendía como una estrategia excluyente que imposibilitaba la concertación de compromisos y pactos de élite que han hecho posible la democracia en muchos países.In all cases, authors will retain the moral rights established by law and they will yield the right of first publication of their article to the journal.
