Abstract
Por diferentes razones y debido a diversos caminos, México, al llegar el siglo XXI, es una nación constituida por una amplia mayoría de familias que habitan una vivienda propia: es hoy, en este sentido, una nación de "propietarios". Para el año 2000, de acuerdo con las cifras definitivas del XII Censo general de población y vivienda, 78.26% de las viviendas particulares eran propiedad de sus habitantes. Como intentaré demostrar en este trabajo, se trata de un hecho claramente relacionado con las políticas habitacionales desarrolladas por el Estado mexicano, en particular durante los últimos treinta años.
